What is a Modular Exhibition Stand?

If you've been to a trade show and admired a large branded display that wraps around a stand space — chances are it was modular. Modular exhibition stands are display systems built from interchangeable components that can be reconfigured, expanded, or downsized across different events without buying a new stand each time.

A modular exhibition stand is a reusable display system built from standardised, interchangeable components. Unlike bespoke custom-build stands, modular systems let you reconfigure the same hardware to fit different event spaces - scaling up, scaling down, or changing shape - while simply swapping graphics as your brand evolves.

Unlike a traditional custom-build stand (which is typically built once and discarded), or a basic banner stand (which offers minimal visual impact), modular sits in the sweet spot: professional presence, long-term value, and genuine flexibility.

The term 'modular' actually covers several distinct system types — from pop-up displays to magnetic fabric walls to LED lightbox systems. This guide breaks each one down so you can choose the right fit for your business and budget.

4 Types of Modular Exhibition Stand

Marler Haley offers four distinct modular systems, each with different strengths. Here's what each one is and who it's suited to.

Linkable pop-up exhibition stand system

Linkable Pop-Up Systems

Two or more pop-up frames connected by a 'ghost panel' to create L-shaped or U-shaped displays. Graphics are PVC panels with magnetic bars. Wheeled carry cases included.

Self-build From £1,285 PVC graphics

Modulate™ magnetic fabric exhibition display

Modulate™ Magnetic Displays

Aluminium tubes with 360° magnetic connectors snap together and link magnetically. Fabric graphics slide over frames - reconfigure the shape without needing extra parts.

Magnetic linking From £299 Fabric graphics

FASTFRAME™ modular fabric exhibition wall

FASTFRAME™ Fabric Walls

Pre-assembled frames fold out and lock in seconds - no tools needed. Seamless SEG fabric graphics push in to the channel. The fastest self-build system for regular exhibitors.

Pros and cons of modular displays vs other stand types

✓ Why modular works

  • Reusable hardware — replace graphics only
  • Scalable for different event spaces
  • Self-build means no contractor fees
  • Fabric graphics are washable and lightweight
  • 5-year hardware guarantee
  • Lower lifetime cost than custom stands

✗ Things to consider

  • Higher upfront cost than a basic banner stand
  • Larger systems may need 2–3 people to build
  • Very bespoke island builds may need contractors
  • PVC panels (pop-up) aren't machine washable

How to Choose the Right Modular System

Not sure where to start? Work through these four steps before choosing a system.

1

Know your floor space

Note the minimum and maximum dimensions across your upcoming events - your system should flex to fit both.

2

Shell scheme or space-only?

All four systems work in shell schemes. Space-only events may benefit from freestanding options with support feet.

3

Set your budget

Fabric backwalls from ~£299. Full LED lightbox stands from ~£4,500. Hire options available if you exhibit infrequently.

4

Buy or hire?

Buying suits regular exhibitors. Hiring is ideal if you exhibit 1–2 times a year or want a fully managed service.

Assembly Times & Build Requirements

All Marler Haley modular systems are designed for self-build - no specialist skills required. Here's what to expect when setting up each system for the first time.

System Build Time People Notes
Linkable pop-up systems
10–30 min
2
Extend frame, attach magnetic bars, hang PVC panels
Modulate™ displays
15–30 min
2
Number-coded tubes connect, fabric slides over frame and zips
FASTFRAME™
10–20 min
2
Pre-assembled frames unfold and lock - fastest self-build option
iLLUMiGO™ LED Lightbox
20–45 min
2–3
Plug-and-play LEDs; SEG fabric pushes in to channel. Manage cables at this point.

Times are estimates for first-time builds. Most teams report significantly faster setup at subsequent events after practising once.

Are modular stands genuinely self-build?

Yes - for the systems above. All Marler Haley modular stands are supplied with numbered components and clear instructions. If you're unsure about a specific system's complexity, our team can walk you through it before you buy.

For large island stands or very complex configurations (typically 6m+), we'd recommend a pre-event practice build and can offer training support.

What Sizes are Available?

Modular systems can scale from a compact single backwall up to a fully wrapped 10m exhibition space. Off-the-shelf packages cover the most common exhibition stand allocations:

Should You Buy or Hire a Modular Stand?

Both options are available across our range. The right choice depends on how often you exhibit and whether you want to manage storage and logistics yourself.

Buy — best if you…

  • Exhibit 3+ times per year
  • Want full control over graphics and setup
  • Have storage space between events
  • Are committed to a consistent brand display
  • Want the lowest long-term cost per show

Hire — best if you…

  • Exhibit 1–2 times per year
  • Want a fully managed, delivered service
  • Don't have storage space for hardware
  • Need a show-ready stand without logistics
  • Want to trial a larger stand before buying

Our managed hire service delivers, installs, and dismantles your stand at the venue - including graphics, lighting, carpet, and furniture. Learn more about exhibition stand hire →

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — all modular systems are designed for repeated use. If your graphics are still current, simply rebuild at your next venue. Fabric graphics can be machine-washed on a cool cycle if they pick up marks between events. When you rebrand, replace graphics only and keep the hardware.

Both use fabric SEG graphics and tool-free assembly. FASTFRAME™ uses pre-assembled folding frames that unfold and lock — making it the fastest build option. Modulate™ uses individual number-coded tubes with 360° magnetic connectors, which offers more reconfiguration flexibility. Modulate™ can be resized without buying extra components; FASTFRAME™ requires frame additions to change footprint.

Yes. A linked pop-up system can be split into two (or more) individual pop-up stands by replacing the ghost/linking panel with end curve panels. You'll need to purchase end panels for the inner edges when separating, but this is significantly cheaper than buying a complete new stand. It's worth planning for this when you buy — getting all graphics printed at the same time ensures colour consistency.

Standard off-the-shelf configurations cover 3×2m, 3×3m, and 3×4m stand spaces. The iLLUMiGO™ LED lightbox system scales up to 7.85m wide. Custom sizes are available across all systems for island stands, unusual footprints, or very large backwalls. Call us on 0800 072 7742 to discuss custom builds.

No — all four systems are designed for self-build by your own team. Assembly times range from 10 minutes (FASTFRAME™) to 45 minutes (larger iLLUMiGO™ configurations). For very large or complex island stands, we recommend a practice build and can provide training support. Our managed hire service is also available if you'd prefer us to handle everything.

Old fabric and PVC graphics can be returned to Marler Haley through our recycling scheme. We ensure materials are recycled responsibly so they don't end up in landfill.

Yes to both. All four systems work in shell scheme environments — the slim aluminium frames fit within the walls without taking up excessive floor space. For space-only events (where no walling is provided), freestanding configurations with support feet are available.

Entry-level Modulate™ fabric frames start from around £299 ex. VAT for a single module. Pre-configured shell scheme kits start from approximately £1,285 (pop-up systems) or £1,590 (FASTFRAME™). iLLUMiGO™ LED lightbox systems start from £4,500. Custom and larger configurations are quoted individually — call 0800 072 7742 for a quote.
